Gilles and Jeanne

(1987)
A novel by

This is a provocative and vivid retelling of the relationship between Joan of Arc and Gilles de Rais. Written in the blanks left in the existing historical and sacred texts, but never contradicting them, it uses the two contrasting figures as poles in a moral landscape. Gilles de Rais was one of the French nobles who rallied to the cause of the French Dauphin and witnessed the miracle of Jean in action and martyrdom of her death. After her death his life moves towards becoming an inverted mirror image of hers, as she aspired to ultimate goodness, so he aspires towards ultimate evil with a chilling and unnervingly challenging logic.
