Left in the Desert to Die
(2025)(Book 149 in the Tales of the Old West series)
A novel by Paul L Thompson
A brand new Western adventure from Paul L. Thompson!
U.S. Marshal Shorty Thompson and his partner Reno Gibbins walked from the livery in Phoenix just as a young boy came running up all out of breath.
‘Howdy, Franky. What er you doin’ all the way down here away from the depot?’
‘This here telegram was sent to Lordsburg for you. Says right here for someone to get it to your ranch. It’s from Blythe and Dad picked it up saying you needed it, being as he knew you were right here in town. There’s folks in bad trouble is what it says. Uh huh, lost.’
The telegram read, ‘Shorty, your friend Hershal Porter and one of his children, Donny, never arrived in Needles. I can’t leave. Need your help before it’s too late, if it isn’t already.’ Signed, Sheriff Cub Wilson.
Hershal and Hazel Porter owned the hardware and mercantile supply store in Blythe, California. They had a very thriving business and were thankful for that railroad. They ordered supplies by mail and no longer had to wait months for them to come by wagon. That train brought them in less than a week.
Now Hershal and his son Donny headed north across that hot, blistering desert to oversee building another store in Needles. They hired a man and wife, Dan and Diane Murry, to help Hazel run the store in Blythe for a couple of months until Hershal and Donny returned.
Will that ever happen? That wife’s brother thought not. This was a very nice store for his sister to own.
Rudy watched as Hershal drove off in that covered wagon headed north. ‘Looks as if that desert is going to swallow half of this family. Whiskey time for a couple days then me and the boys will catch up.’
Genre: Western
