While the homeworld staggered through a near–Dark Age, its far-flung colonies survived under the iron grip of the Zvezdari—immensely wealthy interstellar traders who rode near-light ships across the Halo Worlds, letting time dilation stretch their lifespans into centuries. They became legends. They became untouchable. And they became the true masters of human space.
Now Earth has risen again.
The secret of faster-than-light travel has shattered the old order, and a reborn Earth is ready to reclaim its place among the stars. The Zvezdari, fearing the collapse of their vast trading empire—and the exposure of dangerous alien alliances—strike first. Earth freighters are ambushed. Commerce turns to brinkmanship. War looms.
Then a covert Earth mission to the forbidden Shrouded Stars—a region from which no ship has ever returned—sends back a final transmission: strange black vessels… and an attack. The Zvezdari are blamed.
To force the truth into the open, Earth outfits an old armored freighter, Shenandoah, with hidden weapons and a desperate mission: draw out the raiders, capture them alive, and drag the Zvezdari to the negotiating table.
Command falls to Commander Nathaniel Mercer—historian, reluctant officer, and a man with a wound that has never healed. His fiancée was murdered in a Zvezdari raid. Now he must hunt the very people he swore to destroy… without igniting a war that could burn human space to ash.
