For now, the Free Worlds are at peace, but a desperate distress signal from a distant, half-forgotten outpost warns of a new threat the lies in the stars beyond the Rim, beyond explored space, one that could disrupt the tenuous balance of power between the Federation and Republic. Only one ship can be spared to investigate this mystery, the Samarkand, under the command of Captain Jack Hunter, renegade and former exile. Once more he must fly beyond the Rim into the depths of unknown space, guided only by whispered rumors and stories of lost colonies and long-failed expeditions to guide him.
Accompanying him, a Marine Strike Force under the command of recently commissioned Lieutenant Nick Kozak, an assortment of rogues and troublemakers, the dregs of a dozen garrisons across known space. His task is to create a lethal fighting force capable of taking on the best the galaxy has to offer, to prepare them for a daring raid on an unknown world in the face of overwhelming odds, against an enemy they have never seen before.
If either man fails in his mission, Earth falls.
