After escaping Earth and the forces of the Commonwealth, Commodore Maxwell and the crew of the battleship Farragut are on the run, their old ship stolen by a traitor, lost amid the stars. While trying to find their way back to their home port of Lemuria, the last safe haven in the galaxy for free humanity, they stumble across an ancient secret, a forgotten colony world where the last survivors are at war with a force of vicious, savage beasts that have already eliminated the remainder of their civilization, the sole remaining settlement having mere hours to live.
