Fiction - For centuries the Basque Easter tradition of carrying a cross from the town of Rosala to San Sabastin has been observed. Now the townspeople have decided to end this pilgrimage with one final grand gesture and bring their village into the 20th century. They have chosen Juegas, a native Basque farmer to carry the cross to the Pope in Rome. He is a reluctant pilgrim because his wife is about to have their third child, and there is a great deal of hard work to be done on the farm at this time of year. But, after receiving assurances from the town leaders that eveything will be taken care of, he sets off for Rome. Along the road, dreams and fantasies open his mind. The reactions of strangers either trouble or delight him as he encounters unexpected cruelties and kindnesses. Although he remains basically the same man, he acquires new personal resources, and the profound chages taking place in him lead to a dramatic climactic scene in St. Peter's Square.
