The Kigon were the invaders of the Galaxy of Man, but oblivious to the presence of Man as they gathered their own scattered populations fleeing a hazard left far behind. Inadvertendly, they emptied human worlds as well despite the disparity between the two species. One such Kigon transport orbits a red dwarf sun on the outskirts of Andromeda, its sole planet, Hydrabyss, a slowly evaporting water world. Humanity escaped the Kigon stars ship and had only a water world without resources within which to take refuge. They had one other resource, however, the Kigon transport itself. Slowly and systematically, they scavenged the vessel to build cities within their world of water. Chayn and Villimy arrive in time to draw attention to the fact that the Kigon ship is still inhabited by Kigon and managed by an AI called Lorb. In destroying the starship, the Chilsun, Children of the Yellow Sun, are destroying their only hope to reach Andromeda proper and find a world more suitable for the human species. Lorb is not in a cooperative mood, but as Chayn and Villimy begin to solve the most critical problem of both parties, but it behooves him to realize that continued conflict and combat will lead to mutual extinction. Now begins the real battle to reverse the process, scavenge the cities to salvage the starship and prepare for a trip to a new home with the help of what had been the scourge of mankind.
