A theatre in the forest, a grotto where the devil lives, and a brutal murder.
It is autumn in Brittany, and Sandrine is visiting the small town of Huelgoat to see the legendary forest where the giant Gargantua once roamed, and where the devil supposedly lives in a cave. Much to her surprise, she encounters Commandant Gérard of the gendarmerie, who is investigating a murder. A male corpse has been found in the forest. After some hesitation, Sandrine agrees to help him with the investigation.
The deceased is an investigative journalist who had retired to Huelgoat. Had someone taken revenge on him for exposing them in his articles? Did his murderer want to prevent the book he was writing from being published? Or had the arrogant man made too many enemies in the village?
Sandrine sets out to uncover the dark secrets the victim had carefully hidden, one by one. She quickly realises that the inhabitants of this seemingly idyllic village have more to hide than meets the eye.
