The Life & Times of Widow Chang
A Story by

Ill-Begotten Gains, a short story.
In mid-1550 along China’s sea coast, corruption, exploitation, and violence had become normalized. The criminal leadership was firmly interwoven with the civil and military leadership itself. Without connections to the vast illegal network, the longsuffering populace was left abused and powerless.

Such was the world in which Widow Chang lived. Her husband and young son had been murdered by Japanese pirates—or so she was told—and their case abruptly closed. Searching for truth and justice, Widow Chang—a woman with no significant social status or wealth—found herself struggling against unknown, but formidable, powers.
