Justice Delayed, Justice Denied
(2022)(A book in the Ming Dynasty Mystery series)
A novel by P A De Voe
Small market towns in late 1300 Ming dynasty China seldom find murder stalking their quiet streets.
However, when there is a mysterious death at a newly opened restaurant, the scholar Shu-chang and doctor Xiang-hua once more find themselves embroiled in a murder investigation. The search for the killer soon expands beyond the seemingly simple case of one man''s death to include kidnapping, land schemes, illegal concubinage, and multiple murders.
The myriad lines of inquiry lead them to a Pandora’s box of suspects: local gang leaders, the secretive beggars’ guild, a powerful town elder, and the highest-ranking government official in the province. A mistake in their findings could lead to disastrous consequences for all involved. Accusations alone would result in personal and economic ruin for the alleged criminals and their families, whether innocent or guilty. And, if the accused is found innocent, Shu-chang and Xiang-hua themselves would suffer heavy penalties in returnfor having defamed the innocent.
Whereas previously, the two sleuths faced and overcame daunting obstacles together, this case proves to be different. For, as the investigation progresses, they come to differing conclusions, thereby undermining the bonds of trust and respect they once shared.
What are the costs of truth and justice, and when is the price too high?
Genre: Mystery
