The Accidental Assassin
(2026)(The first book in the Accidental Assassin series)
A novel by Wynn Valentine
Roger Hodge is not a dangerous man. He’s not even a particularly interesting one.
He’s a forty-two-year-old accountant who files his taxes early, flosses with clinical intensity, and drives a Honda Civic with a bumper sticker that says ‘I’d Rather Be Auditing.’ His most reckless act in fifteen years was accidentally cc’ing his entire office on an email meant for his therapist. On Saturdays, he plays golf badly at a public course in the kind of suburb where people have three-hundred-comment arguments about mulch.
Then his golf ball kills a man. And Roger’s life becomes a problem.
When a freak tee shot sends his signature red Callaway over a tree line and into the skull of a city council member, Roger is arrested for murder. He doesn’t understand why. He doesn’t understand how. He says ‘fudge-knuckles’ instead of swearing because his mother scared the real words out of him when he was nine. He is not equipped for this.
But Roger is an accountant, and accountants notice things. Numbers that don’t add up. Insurance claims processed too fast. Money going places money shouldn'''t go. So he does the only thing he knows how to do: he makes a spreadsheet. And what that spreadsheet reveals is a conspiracy involving a real estate developer, a corrupt insurance adjuster who was approving death claims before people died, and a shadowy organization that has been arranging ‘accidents’ across the city.
Now Rogera man who once had a panic attack about a misplaced decimalis breaking into server rooms, dodging mobsters, and relying on a twenty-something hacker who lives above a laundromat, a retired mob consultant who communicates exclusively in two-sentence paragraphs, and a federal prosecutor who may or may not be on his side. He has no plan. He has no skills. He has a Honda Civic and an extremely thorough understanding of tax code.
It’s going to have to be enough.
The Accidental Assassin is what happens when a man with no business being in a thriller ends up in one anyway. It’s the funniest book about murder you’ll read this year. Book 1 of a new series.
Genre: Mystery
