Arnold Gold, Seattle's most unconventional cyber-detective, is on his first real date with Kara Winston—a paralegal who became a trusted ally during the previous pacemaker-hacker case—when his finely tuned instincts begin firing. Something is wrong. Someone is watching.

That someone is Rashidi, a terrorist with a methodical and deadly patience. Rashidi has identified Kara as Arnold's vulnerability and begins surveilling her with the cold precision of a professional. When Arnold's rooftop security system captures a shadowy figure tossing poisoned hamburger into his backyard to kill his dog Chance, the threat moves from unease to urgency. Arnold is being hunted—and the people he cares about are the weapons being used against him.

At the same time, Gold, Patel, and Associates is fracturing from within. Vihaan Patel—Prisha's estranged husband and a disruptive former team member—demands reinstatement. The team votes him out, adds the skilled Serge Valchenka as a replacement, and tries to keep pace with an overwhelming backlog of client work while Arnold privately battles the terrorist threat he cannot yet share with them.

Using his formidable AI network SAM and raw Verizon cell tower data, Arnold reverse-engineers the location of Rashidi's phone from the night of the poisoned-meat incident—a painstaking technical gamble that pays off in GPS coordinates. But the victory comes too late to protect Kara, who is kidnapped by Rashidi and his associate and held in a basement safe house for days before law enforcement frees her.

When it is over, Kara blocks Arnold's number. She survived because terrorists knew he cared about her. That knowledge, Prisha tells him bluntly, is reason enough to walk away—and Kara clearly agrees. Arnold is left in the wreckage of the crisis with a new teammate, an excess Honolulu property, and a relationship that may be irreparably destroyed by the life he leads.
