(2026)
(The ninth book in the Cornish Hotel Mystery series)
A novel by

At Penmorrow’s charity film night, the final reel ends with a man dead beside the exit.

Aubrey Vellacott has come to inspect the Regent Picture House, examine its uncertain future and settle accounts that threaten several livelihoods. During the interval, a small exchange of reserved seats appears to place every organiser in full view. But after Aubrey is found in the exit vestibule, the ticket record proves only where people were meant to sit''not who occupied each chair.

Hotel owner Edmund Trewin and his niece Katherine trace numbered envelopes, amended allocations and witnesses who saw silhouettes rather than faces. With Dr Margaret Verran keeping assumption separate from medical fact, they uncover private loyalties, disputed returns and an exit complaint that may have been invented to lure Aubrey from the auditorium.

Then the investigation takes a darker turn. Unless Edmund and Katherine can reconstruct every movement, the murderer may disappear behind the perfect alibi: somebody else’s seat.
