The storm cuts Carew Lodge off from the world—and leaves a murderer inside.

A private winter reunion has drawn old friends, old loyalties and carefully guarded resentments to Colonel Samuel Carew’s country house. When the gale brings down the power and blocks the road, Samuel assigns everyone a place and duty. Yet Hector Polwhele is found dead in the coach-house office, and the orderly household accounts for every guest.

Hotel owner Edmund Trewin and his niece Katherine must reconstruct a night of failed telephone calls, shifting lamps and two exposed routes through the storm. Samuel knows the house and the people within it, but even his precise arrangements cannot prove that anyone remained where they were told. A missing letter wallet and a false account of wet clothing deepen the suspicion.

Then, just as the first crime begins to yield its secrets, another visitor walks into deadly danger—and the storm’s most convincing alibi starts to break apart.
