A novel by

It is 1820 and the ninth Earl of the Ainsty has died, leaving the great house of Ramillies with no direct heir. The tenth Earl is Harry Akeham, a cheerful poverty-stricken schoolmaster whose family had been estranged from their relatives for so long that Harry had never even heard of Ramillies. Local society decides that a single man in possession of a fortune must be in want of a wife, and sets out to find him one - but Harry's affections are most unsuitably engaged elsewhere.
