The Overpowered Village Cook 3
(2026)(The third book in the Copper Ladle series)
A novel by Clay Whitlock
[Provisioner]. The most useful class in a valley with six weeks to plant.
Odric Brannon spent nine years cooking for a mercenary company. These days he runs the village cookshop in Bramblecote, where a household has claimed most of his kitchen and a grey goose claims the rest. The guild called his class useless. Every new dish he cooks for someone hungry makes them a little healthier, for good. Start with Book 1: The Overpowered Village Cook.
Spring comes early and warm. The first pail of milk lands on Odric’s counter, and he learns that Winnowdale has never once kept its milk. Every spring the extra sours or goes to the pigs.
He means to change that. Butter, fresh curd, and a keeping cheese aged in a cool cave beside his ice cellar, so that next winter the valley eats spring.
[Nourished. Permanent.]
A good cheese needs three weeks in the cave, and nobody alive knows whether his magic keeps that long. Odric intends to find out.
The same warm spring wakes a hollow-hog under the lower valley: a pig-sized burrower, harmless to people, with cheek pouches that carry off grain by the double handful. Farm by farm she is emptying granaries from underneath, and her tunnels are working uphill toward the barn that holds Bramblecote’s seed barley.
The valley’s old rule: barley sown after the swifts come home is sown for the birds. If the seed goes down a hole first, Bramblecote plants nothing, and next winter there is nothing to keep.
Dumpling has been screaming at the ground for a week. Nobody listened. Then a catcher nobody wants walks up the valley with a sack of traps, and the goose approves of him on sight. His way is a trap at the hog’s tunnel mouth. Odric’s way is the one he uses on everything: cook it, test it, write it down.
Nesrin, the salt-and-spice trader who shares his fireside between journeys, comes home with a second horse she swears she won’t name and seed barley bought at double last month’s price. And Marda, the widow who runs his yard, has kept the seed barley from her late husband’s field for three springs, waiting until she was strong enough to sow that field herself.
This is the year.
Odric means to get every grain back without hurting the hog. He has six weeks and a great deal of whey.
Perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, Beware of Chicken, The Wandering Inn, and Arcane Chef.
