[Farmer]. The commonest class in the kingdom, and the one the army always handed a spade.

For fourteen years, Aldred Coverley dug whatever the king needed digging. Ditches. Roads. Ramparts. He could turn ground from dawn until dark, but he never got to plant a thing.

His discharge comes with forty acres in a quiet valley and a farmhouse with half a roof. The barn needs doors. The neighbors reckon the soil isn’t worth the seed. Aldred clears the well and patches a dry corner of the roof. Then he buys radish seed. This spring, he means to stay for the harvest.

The system has been waiting for one, too.

Fourteen years of work, counted and unpaid. His first basket of radishes brings the whole tally due.

[Farmer. Level 61.]

Suddenly, pulling his own plough is a practical alternative to buying an ox. Stones that needed a team can go exactly where he wants them. His appetite is going to take some getting used to.

He has fallen walls to raise and fields to plant. He’d like to see the same faces at his table next year, in a home he’s made worth coming back to.

The miller, Hilde, knows good grain and has very definite views on when a man ought to stop working and eat. An old sheep breeder comes over to explain why the farm will fail, bringing a seed measure Aldred can borrow. A traveling animal doctor needs somewhere dry for her kit. And the village girl offering to scare his crows wants paying in eggs. Eventually, she wants a field of her own.

Nettle, the one-horned goat, came with the farm. She eats the weeds nobody else will touch and stands on whatever Aldred has just finished building.

There is work enough for all of them. Pale vines creep out of the sour ground each night, and the alehouse keeper has already announced a Harvest Fair. The first in forty years.

By autumn, Aldred needs something worth putting on the stall.
