Dana Coakley is at a crossroads. After working for years as an actress in New York City, she is now
the superintendent of a building on the Upper West Side, while she decides what to do next. Painting apartments and unclogging drains isn't her dream career, but the rent is free, and it gives her time to focus on her volunteer work with local underprivileged teenagers.

One of the students she tutors, a tough kid named Travis, tells her that a recent fire which destroyed his public housing building was arson, not an accident. Dana decides to humor him and see if she can find out the truth. Unfortunately, her investigation leads her to believe that it really was arson--and murder, since several people were killed in the blaze.

There are lots of suspects--from the urbane multi-millionaire real estate magnate to the neighbor drug lord. But, with the help of her two wisecracking best friends, Dana is determined to find out what really happened that dark and terrible night.

And someone seems to be just as determined to stop her.
