"The Chalet" is a Christian, rural, coastal resort community where middle to older age adults go to support several summer volunteer projects. These projects include building and improving housing for the needy and serving through the community’s action agencies. Those who volunteer, support each other's spouse losses and other challenges as they work to help the community. Romantic relationships are developed as those who stay become long-standing friends and soon-to-be lovers.
Archer helps the community in many ways by rehabbing homes and does this by supporting the volunteers as the general contractor and coach for building projects. In addition, Archer is a respected leader in his local church. He has long been Bea’s best friend and consummate bachelor voice of reason, but when a reeling Muriel comes to town, he is instantly shaken to his core. The fact she is so sad and searching for her direction, draws them together, but soon he finds there is a bigger plan afoot as they grow closer.
Muriel is a woman with everything and yet has had significant challenges lately. She has been blessed to travel the world alongside her best friend and do some amazing projects in many places. When her friend got sick though, she thought it would be temporary, but life had other plans. Now broken, downtrodden, and unsure of the future, she follows her friend Arla’s last wishes to go to Barco Bay. Not expecting a lot from the visit, Muriel is overcome by the people in this little village from the first moment she sets foot there.
