She feeds the whole town. He won't eat a bite. And Halloween is coming.
Birdie Mott runs the best free supper in the mountains out of a decommissioned funeral home in Marrow Hollow, Idaho. Free, every night, to anybody hungry. Nobody has ever said no to her cooking.
Then a seven-foot stranger in a too-thin canvas jacket ducks in out of the first hard cold. He apologizes to her door frame and leaves frost on the knob. And he turns down her dumplings. Then the next night's bowl. And the next. Dennis is the most anxiously polite man she has ever met, and he is hiding a hunger older than the town.
He has kept that hunger starved since the winter of 1884, and he means to keep it that way. But Birdie's kitchen is warm, her mouth never stops, and she has decided, loudly, that this man is going to eat.
Now the health inspector wants her kitchen up to code by Halloween. The whole town has signed up for the Monster Supper. And the one guest Birdie can't feed might be the one who needs it most.
A goose with opinions. A casserole brigade with a grudge. An inspector locked in a mortuary cooler, and something shy at the tree line. And a town that knows exactly what sits at its tables and passes the rolls anyway. Laugh-out-loud funny, open-door steamy, and a guaranteed happily-ever-after. Standalone in the Cryptid Comforts series. No cliffhanger, no cheating.
