Sir Gregory Fortis, a former head of British Intelligence, dies near his home in Testem Magna after being torn to death by his Dobermann dogs. Weeks later, the village's local policeman is shot at with an Armalite rifle - hardly the weapon of a poacher. Two unusual events bring the Serious Incident Unit to the village to investigate the possibility of a connection. Sergeant Jack Bull heads the Unit, and has his own reasons for hoping for a straightforward arrest. But his hopes are soon dashed...
