A novel by M Carl Wiest
Twelve below. A broken ankle. A stolen dog. She went anyway.
The gate was open. Keetna was gone. She left a message.Kaitlynn Rogers steps onto her porch into the wrong kind of December silence. Her malamute isn't at her hip.
Two thousand five hundred and fifty-five mornings. She has never not been at her hip.
The gate wasn't forced. It was opened — gloved hands, all the time in the world.
Inside it, traced slow with her toes: the mark her trainer calls Sign. I was taken. Follow.
Kaitlynn reads snow for the state of Alaska. This snow says two men, walking east, unhurried. Not worried about being followed.
They should have been.
East is the airstrip. The airstrip is a plane. Snow holds tracks. Sky doesn't.
Three weeks ago, somebody killed her neighbor on a bluff after dark. The snow never said why.
It's starting to.
Twelve below. Storm coming.
She goes anyway.
Somewhere ahead in the white, a dog is howling. Long-short-long.
I'm alive. I'm here. Come.
