Philomena Blake and her identical twin sister, Patricia, have played piano duets together since childhood. When Patsy goes to New York, she suggests that Phil takes her place in a job she has just obtained, as teacher of music to Bryden Scott's children in Cumbria. Phil leaves London, certain that Mr Scott will not mind if she takes her sister's place. But Patsy has lied to Phil - Bryden Scott has no children and he does not need a teacher of music.
