Some of the stories in this collection take place in the Appalachian mountains. Others are revisions of fairy tales or spin-offs from literature. Some of the grandmothers protect their grandchildren fiercely, and others try to divorce their families altogether. Some of the grandmothers are brave, and some are transfixed by disease and old age.
