Fifteen steps. That's what it took to climb from ground level to the platform at the top of the gallows. Four men climbed those steps that morning. Their journey down would be through four trap doors with a rope around each of their necks. It wasn't to be. If the four had known what awaited on this side of Hell, then their plan to escape would have been abandoned and each would have chosen their court-ordered fate. Sometimes a man trades one death for another. On this occasion, the path each chose might be considered a fate worse than death.
