In this intriguing mystery, noted British barrister Antony Maitland leaves London for the provincial Yorkshire town of Arkenshaw, where he has been asked to defend local actor Richard Willard, accused of hiring an assassin to murder his estranged wife, Laura. Maitland has doubts about his client's innocence, for Willard alone had both means and motive for committing the crime. He and his wife had separated amicably years before, and Richard had gone on visiting their son every Sunday. Several weeks before her death, however, Laura had announced her intention to divorce Richard in order to remarry, and he willingly agreed. But Laura's fiance, a member of a a puritanical religious cult, did not approve of actors and pronounced that after his marriage to Laura, Richard would no longer be allowed to visit his beloved son. Furious, Richard declared his intention to thwart the couple's plans. Moreover, he was seen talking to a hit man in a pub shortly before Laura was shot. But Maitland rarely accepts the obvious, and his skepticism leads him to probe deeper into the case with his usual mixture of diffidence and deductive prowess. Book Dust Jacket
