Song At Twilight

(1989)
A novel by

Newly retired French teacher Prudence Fishbourne is spending her twilight days writing her memoirs. However, the past is a dangerous place and it's not long before old memories resurface from where Patricia buried them all those years ago.

She looks back at her relationship with a young student at her old school, Timothy Hooper, whom she befriended after noticing his air of vulnerability and sparkling academic promise.

Yet things take a turn for the worse when Patricia introduces Timothy to her handsome, young nephew and he becomes increasingly distant and withdrawn.

As her diary unfolds, we begin to question whether Patricia is being entirely honest with herself in her feelings for Timothy.

Back in the present day, a close relationship starts to blossom between Patricia and her neighbour, Eric, but when he begins to show a considerable interest in her eccentric niece, Laurel, is history doomed to repeat itself?

Will Patricia ever find peace and happiness in her twilight years?

Or will her journey back down memory lane prove a painful reminder of a time she would rather forget?

Song at Twilight is a delightful read about learning from past mistakes and never giving up on your happy ending.

Praise for Teresa Waugh

'What a treat to turn to Teresa Waugh. One of her great talents is to convey passion and anguish through irony and restraint... A small triumph, translucent with humour, perception and sympathy.' - The Literary Review on Song at Twilight

'A deft comic portral... sharp-eyed fun.' Miranda Seymour of The Standard on Waterloo Waterloo
