The Limbo Ladies

(1969)

Deciding that a hypocritical home situation may be more harmful to growing children than having separated parents, Sarah Marston escapes from an empty marriage when she inherits a cottage and a sum of money from an eccentric aunt.

In Shenbury, where she goes to live, she finds a former school-friend, Paula Fisher, now a journalist, living with her widowed mother. She forms a business alliance with Frances Delaney, who runs a thriving shop in the local market town and has developed a successful formula for life.

Sarah discovers that by leaving her husband, she has entered the subculture of contemporary life populated by women who are excluded from the 'Partners Club' because they are widowed, divorced or unmarried. She learns to value her own strength and independence; in her encounter with David Watson she accepts the responsibility of her belief in the right of each individual to develop in freedom.
