Dr. Patrick Grant goes to Crete for a holiday and to search for the missing godson of a deceased colleague. While swimming early one morning, Patrick discovers a body floating in the water. It is that of Felix Lomax, another colleague, who was to spend part of the vacation lecturing aboard a cruise liner. The police seem satisfied that his death was accidental, and when he learns that the Persephone has not been near Crete recently he begins an investigation.
