Regency Erotica. Jane is in London and, because of a sudden change in circumstances, has been forced into prostitution. Her cousin Helena - a young widow - found herself in a similar situation two years before and has offered her advice about dealing with clients. Jane was introduced to Mr Brenchley who is having a dilapidated property refurbished and suggests she acts as a live-in caretaker at the premises, enabling her to entertain clients while looking after the place. His associate provides her with a device that will heighten his passion during intimacy, and later introduces her to two young gentlemen - Clements and Hatton - who become her clients. They speak of a secret ceremony soon to take place and Jane wonders if it is to be held in the basement of the property; it has the appearance and mysterious atmosphere of a dark cathedral crypt.
