A modern murder. An ancient grave.

When a body is found in a cave high on an Iron Age hillfort, DI Fraser is stunned to find herself excluded from the case. Not only did she find the body, one of the key witnesses is an old friend of her partner, Marianne.

After the discovery of the first body, an archaeological dig uncovers another set of bones, not Iron Age but at most twenty years old. Are the two deaths related? Fraser must watch from the sidelines as her trusty former sidekick, DS Corby, takes on her first major case.

It seems everyone is standing in Corby’s way as she struggles to uncover long-buried secrets. A lord of the shire; an Oxford professor; a mysterious artist; even the new DI to whole she must report. And what does her case have to do with Fraser’s current investigation into the vandalism of ancient burial sites?

Who placed the bones in the cist? Who wrapped the body in tarpaulin? And, if the deaths, fifteen years apart, are as unrelated as they seem, why are their physical injuries identical?

Someone is out for revenge. Fraser and Corby must find out who.
