In 1961 middle America, 11-year-old Abel has a lifelong history of night terrors and suffering from things that go bump in the night. Recently though, the nightmares have escalated rapidly as the boy begins to see through the eyes of murder victims in their last moments alive. He turns to his new neighbor and best friend, Rachel for solace to make it through their school days.
Abel's mother, Leanne, discovers that the bad dreams are being caused by more than an overly active imagination, accidentally stumbling upon the secret that he is having visions of real people dying. She scrambles to protect her son from learning the truth, fearing that he won't be able to handle the responsibility on his small shoulders. Will Leanne save her son before the encroaching evil consumes their entire family?
