Middle-aged widow Lois Stone returns to Toronto for a Thanksgiving weekend visit. She loves Fenwater, the small town where she now lives, but it’s good to see her old friends and neighbourhood. While strolling through the local park, she interrupts a vicious mugging in the same spot where her husband was attacked and died three years ago, but she can’t prevent the assailant fleeing with the elderly victim’s purse. Despite the painful memories the crime evokes, Lois is determined to track down the assailant and turn him over to the police, and recover a treasured keepsake for the victim.
And so begins a weekend of enduring friendships, tiramisu and apple pie, glittering gifts, stealthy shopping, a sauce-stained constable and the elusiveness of a familiar face set against the backdrop of autumn splendour in a riverside park, scurrying squirrels with bulging cheeks, the roar of rushing waterfalls and an Italian-Canadian Thanksgiving feast.
