Elspeth Granger, Viscountess Mulholland has been perfectly satisfied with her daughters’ fortunes so far. Four of them had wed, including Marigold, who lived so close by. Now it was Lily’s turn and it was bound to be the most straightforward of all her girls. Lily was quiet, composed, and elegant and the viscountess was certain it should be no trouble at all to find someone worthy of her. The gentleman would be similar, a steady country gentleman living a life similar to what Lily has always known at Chemsworth Hall.
At least, that’s what she’d thought before she was disabused of the idea.
Lily Granger might be reserved, but her outward appearance belies an active mind that is overflowing with plans. She has no intention of wedding a country gentleman as she is not overfond of the countryside itself. She barely rides her horse and spends her days reading romantic novels and The Morning Post, and working on womanly pursuits. She longs for London. She longs for an elegant and sophisticated gentleman who will talk of the symphony rather than how the chickens are laying. She longs for her knight with courtly manners who will dare anything to protect her.
Therefore, it is necessary that the viscountess use all her longstanding connections in Town to gather together a selection of London gentlemen. Chemsworth Hall is to have an elegant house party.
Simon Montclaire, Baron Knightswood, has been wrestled into attending a house party somewhere in Oxfordshire by his mother. He’s agreed to it mostly to escape the talk that he has an interest in Lady Lavinia Metcalf. He has no such interest, but that will not stop the ton from talking. He does not expect much from the visit to Chemsworth Hall, but that is before he sets eyes on Lily Granger.
There is something between Lily and Knightswood, but is a house party a sufficient amount of time for something firm to develop? Perhaps it would be easier to discern if there were not a baby arriving, a mother-in-law/daughter-in-law feud, a bullet gone astray, a near-drowning, an embarrassing minuet, a traitorous letter sent to Carlton House, and Viscount Mulholland forever wondering why all these people keep turning up at his table.
If anything is to go forward between Lily and Lord Knightswood, one of them is going to have to take bold steps. Very bold steps.
