Summer holidays are rather a problem for the Wood Street Gang; there's really nowhere to play in the hot, dusty streets of Liverpool. Then Cherry suggests trying to make friends with the grumpy old man who owns the dirty, overcrowded antique shop below Mayo, Bridget and Paddy O'Donnell. It is hard going but their efforts finally succeed so well that he allows the children (and Mrs. O'Donnell) to look after his shop while he is in the hospital.....
