In this newest Anglo Norman mystery, a charcoal burner is murdered in the greenwood and Estrid conducts an investigation into his death.
When a charcoal burner from a village near Rochester is brutally slain in the forest while tending his mounds, Estrid Thunorsdohter is asked by the sheriff to investigate the killing. In concert with the constable of Rochester castle, Hugues fitzTurston, she begins an enquiry but is unable to discover anyone who might have a motive. It is not until a local Norman lord is attacked that the trail to the murderer begins to clear, but due to the animosity between the English and their Norman overlords, it proves a difficult task for Estrid to bring the enqury to a resolution.
