Lord Craythorne dismisses his niece's governess for immoral behaviour. But they meet up again when she accompanies his escort Mrs Wylde to Venice. Constantly wrong-footed by fate, it is not until the travellers reach Venice where tragedy threatens, that Craythorne is forced to revoke his earlier assumptions and confront his feelings.
