When in 1812 Americans were added to the French prisoners-of-war housed in Dartmoor Prison, some of the American naval officers were lodged in the surrounding villages on parole. Caroline Quenby of Venncombe Manor falls in love with one of them - Naval Surgeon Thaddeus Forbes of Virginia - but, unfortunately, her father regards the Americans not only as enemies but traitors.
