The Elf-Shot Boy is a story about a boy named AEl-fgar (Gar) who has what we now call Down syndrome. Just before the midsummer assembly, when boys Gar's age become legal adults, symbolized by getting an iron weapon, a girl called Oshild is raped and murdered. Everyone thinks Gar is too simple to become a legal adult, but he takes it upon himself to help Hring, the assistant advocate in town for the assembly, investigate the crime. They discover that Oshild apparently stole the only copy of a charter that proves ownership of a nearby estate, which is being contested at the midsummer gemot. The more they investigate, the stronger the connection between the murder and the theft becomes. This promises to cause trouble for everyone, but all Gar is concerned about is avenging Oshild's murder and getting his iron.
