Ex-army medic Andrei Trifonovich never meant to become a god. Deep in the 19th-century Balkans, a secretive crypto-Thracian cult now hails him as the Wealthgiver, avatar of Hades, Master of the Holy Mountain, husband of their prophetess Kori.
But now her priests insist the time has come to rise up, and found a new empire in blood and conquest with Andrei as its king. If he refuses, he’ll be killed, of course. If he accepts, he’ll die in yet another pointless war.
Between their zealous new bodyguard, Kori’s conflicted loyalties, and a thousand scheming death-cultists, Andrei must pretend to lead this tiny new nation. At least until he can escape again.
