Sweet Chariot

(1942)
A novel by

This is the account of the extraordinary experience which befell Mr Gregory Spillett whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Mr. Spillett is an English schoolmaster, celibate, shy, conventional in his behaviour and opinions, a man with few vices and little experience of life. Like Miss Hargreaves this is a story of the supernatural written straight. Mr Baker does not explain why Gregory Spillett is chosen as a vehicle of revelation : he is content to lavish his humour, persuasiveness and observation upon him, and to give his vivid imagination full rein in fantastic incident. An odd and original story, remarkable in many ways, it is bound to add to the author's growing reputation.
