Old Brigg had confided to him a craving to meet the great Mr. Fortune and Blenkinsop had eagerly arranged it. He knew all about Brigg. The man belonged to an old Wessex family. His place down there had been in their hands for generations. Brigg hadn't had it long. He'd made his pile in the cotton trade before the estate came to him.
