When Grace Fox is involved in a car accident, she suffers brain damage. When she eventually wakes up she is speaking fluent Mandarin, a language for which she has shown little aptitude previously. English, her mother tongue, sounds alien to her.
As she recovers she visits a clinic in London and on the return journey she overhears a man admit to murder, in Mandarin, on his phone.
Initially she is not believed but eventually she finds a champion on the police force and soon it becomes clear that the murder is linked to an international plot to interfere with the electoral process and influence the outcome.
Soon, Grace becomes a liability to too may people, and staying alive long enough to expose the plot will be her next big challenge.
