The Story:
ONCE A TARGET, ALWAYS A TARGET.
After a mysterious call lands Jack Mercer on the doorsteps of an unknown home, nothing could've prepared him for the family of bloodied corpses he was about to encounter inside. The man on the other end of the line also left a clue, the number eight, and as Jack scans the horrid scene around him, his suspicions steer him in the direction of an old mobster.
Confident he's singled out the man responsible for the murders, Jack focuses his attention on an ex-con he threw behind bars over two decades prior.
But can he prove it?
As the search for clues heightens, the death toll rises, and Jack can't help but doubt he'll crack the case in time—or at all. His criminal adversary watches from the shadows with a growing air of satisfaction as the former cop that jailed him fails to piece the puzzle together.
And that's not all.
One man in each family has a bullseye on his chest. All the victims seem to tie back to an age-old hit job that got scrapped when Jack threw his suspect into prison. But the killer has returned to finish the job and he's taking down his targets' families too.
Studying the patterns from each crime scene, Jack races to make sense of the clues before the clock winds down on the next murder. But something's wrong. There's a ninth family on the killer's hit list, and by all indications, it might be Jack's.

Justice was swift, but a criminal's revenge is slow and crafty in this nail-biting tale of vengeance. Can Jack crack the case before he becomes The Ninth Target?

THE DETECTIVE:
Jack Mercer is forty-four, a lone wolf and an excellent detective. He works as a Private Investigator, from his own firm the Mercer Detective Agency. With his team, a junior detective Aaron Hart, and close friend and secretary, the fiery redhead Lauren Becket, Jack always gets to the bottom of his case, no matter how many twists and turns come down the road.
He lives alone, with the intentions of getting a pet to be his companion, but work rarely allows for personal time. Also he enjoys a bottle of whiskey from time to time and his box of Lucky Strikes (no matter how hard he tries to kick the habit).
