Robert Harcliffe, fresh from college and a member of a firm in New Orleans, of which his Uncle Nelson is the head is sent by this uncle to Brazil to act as private secretary and confidential companion to Dom Miguel de Pintra, head of the revolutionary movement against the Portuguese imposed monarch, Dom Pedro. Liking the prospect of adventure, Robert consented to go, only to be thrown into a maelstrom of intrigue, murder, and love. L. FRANK BAUM is best known as the "Royal Historian of Oz". He was a newspaperman, actor, producer, director, screenplay writer, and the creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and many other children's stories. Under pen-names, he also wrote boys' and girls' books, and adult novels. Writing as Schuyler Staunton, he created THE FATE OF A CROWN novel of espionage and intrigue.
