From a Well-Wisher: The Complaints Department
(2026)(A book in the Brandling House Cosy Crime Mystery series)
A novel by Lee Brook
Everybody loved Gerry Ingram.
He remembered your husband's regiment. He knew which of your tablets went with food. He did card tricks at the good table by the window, and if you'd had bad news he'd be knocking at your door before you'd put the phone down.
One woman at Brandling House never believed a word of it. On the fourth of March, at a residents' meeting, Annie Farrar said out loud that somebody ought to put something in that man's tea. It was minuted. It was circulated to forty-one flats and pinned on the board by the office.
Two weeks later he is found dead in his armchair, and nobody is surprised that it was his heart.
Until the pathologist declines to sign the certificate.
DI Isabella Wood has spent four months in that building, two days a week, being trusted by people the system has already let down once. She is seven weeks from giving birth, and every piece of evidence that arrives points at the one resident who saw Gerry Ingram coming. Who will not explain herself. Not to the police, not to her family, not to anybody.
So three neighbours decide, over a pot of tea in Flat 3, that they are going to help Annie find out what happened, whether anybody asks them to or not.
Because a retired postman, a retired bookkeeper and a retired solicitor have something a murder inquiry hasn't got.
The kettle is always on, and everybody tells them things.
