Colonel Gore, newly established as a private detective, becomes embroiled in an attempt to explain a wave of disappearing husbands afflicting the Guildford area. Whilst pursuing the case, he is called upon by Lord Haviland, the father of one of his clients, to investigate a number of thefts from his Surrey estate - including an important political document, personal letters and some cans of film. When Gore travels to Lord Haviland's country home, however, the mystery of the thefts is soon overshadowed by a far more serious crime - that of murder...

First published in 1927, this stand-alone novel is the third to feature Lynn Brock's detective, Colonel Gore.
