Brothers in Arms is a collection of Lynn Bryant’s short stories. With one exception, all of these stories were previously published on the author’s website, Writing with Labradors. Each of the nine stories explores a different aspect of the long years of the Napoleonic wars.
In 1797 a young boy is illegally pressed into the Royal Navy with unexpected results in The Pressed Man.
In 1810, on the banks of the River Coa, Ensign Evan Powell has his first experience of battle in An Unnecessary Affray.
Three stories set in 1815 explore both French and English views of the Battle of Waterloo in A Perfect Waltz, The Day After and The Christmas After.
And, in a brand new story only available in this book, we return to India in 1803 and learn why Paul van Daan really hates storming a citadel in Brothers in Arms.
The perfect companion to the Peninsular War Saga, this is the first time that Lynn Bryant’s well-loved short stories have been published as a collection.
Brothers in Arms: India, 1803
There was a third column even further to the right, but there seemed to be some confusion in their ranks and they had not yet made the advance. Carl reached for his telescope to see what was happening, then swore softly under his breath.
‘What’s holding them up, Lieutenant?’ Johnny asked, his eyes still on the guards who had set their ladders and were beginning to climb.
‘An elephant, sir.’
‘What?’ Johnny turned to stare at him in astonishment. ‘Give me that ’
‘You don’t need a telescope to see it, Johnny. It’s really big. It seems to have got loose and it’s just scattered the storming party. I expect they’ll form up again when they can.’
‘Are you telling me our coordinated attack is being led by bloody elephants?’ Paul demanded.
