Mr. Misfortunate

(1919)
A novel by

18th century, Great Britain

Support for the Jacobite movement in Scotland, aimed to restore the Stuart line to the British throne, appears to be on the rise.

Charles Edward Stuart - the "Prince" - is determined to restore his family to the throne, and by 1745, his plans to lead a Scottish rebellion are in full effect.

But when the rebellion ends in a crushing defeat at the Battle of Culloden, the future of the Jacobite movement now seems more uncertain than ever.

Now exiled in France, and incensed at the failed rebellion, Charles must decide his next step wisely. But with treachery and betrayal hiding around every corner, he must choose his allies carefully.

And whereas Charles remains determined to reclaim the throne, for his brother Henry, such claims hold little interest. With their differences threatening to damage their relationship forever, will the two brothers ever be able to reconcile?

And will the Jacobite movement succeed?

Or will Charles forever remain Mr. Misfortunate?

Mr Misfortunate is a thrilling historical novel filled with betrayal and intrigue that paints a powerful portrait of the failed Jacobite movement.

Praise for Marjorie Bowen

"A book remarkable alike for its vividness and for its historical perspective" - Daily Express

"Fresh, vivid, exciting and enthralling ... This is a fine book" - The Sphere

"A book in every way worthwhile ... as an individual contribution to the subject, Miss Bowen's work is of the exceptional class." - The Scotsman

Marjorie Bowen was born in 1885 and is one of many pseudonyms the writer Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell Long used. She was one of Britain's most prolific authors of the twentieth century. Writing was more than just a hobby: her works were the primary source of financial support for her family. Between 1906 and her death in 1952, Bowen wrote over 150 books, garnering much acclaim for her popular histories and historical and Gothic romances. Alongside masterful descriptions and concise, efficient prose, she deftly rendered larger-than-life subjects in the minds of her readers. To this day, aficionados of the genres covet Bowen's work. Her other titles include The Sword Decided, Mary Queen of Scots, The Queen's Caprice, The Governor of England, Mistress Nell Gwynn and Dickon.
