The Stone Axe of Burkamukk

(1922)
A novel by

Minnie (Mary) Grant Bruce (1878 - 1958) was an Australian born journalist, short story writer, children's author, poet, feminist, indigenous culture recorder, and a prolific letter writer. She used notes, taken from her letters, for many of her articles.
Her first story was written at the age of seven, but her career actually began in 1895 while writing serial stories for magazines. Bruce's most famous books, the Billabong series, began as a weekly serial. It was so successful that the completed novel, A Little Bush Maid, was published in 1910, launching the first of 15 books about the fictional Linton family.
This fascinating author had a deep respect for the indigenous people of Australia, as well as their culture, and felt a strong sense of urgency to set their history to paper, lest it be lost and forgotten by future generations. Mary Grant Bruce has striven to provide this for her readers with 13 delightful short stories in The Stone Axe of Burkamukk.
